The Samba, the national dance of Brazil, made its debut in the U.S. in the early 1940s. The most important distinguishing characteristic of the Samba dance is its vertical bouncing action. As in the other Latin dances, ball steps are taken along with knee action and body sway. The basic rhythm is "slow--a--slow" or "one--a--two."
